Electrical Permit Applications (RMWB)
We Handle the Paperwork. You Get the Peace of Mind.
One of the most common questions we get is: "Do I really need a permit for this?" In the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB), the answer for almost any electrical work beyond changing a lightbulb is YES.
At Crescent Electric, we believe in doing things right. We are fully licensed to pull electrical permits for residential and commercial projects. We handle the entire permit application process for you — from filing the initial applications and paperwork with the RMWB to scheduling the final inspection.

Why Is an Electrical Permit Required?
An electrical permit isn't just a "tax"—it is your guarantee that the work was done safely and meets the Canadian Electrical Code.
Insurance Coverage
If a fire occurs due to unpermitted electrical work, your home insurance provider may deny your claim.
Resale Value
When you sell your home, buyers will check RMWB records for permits on finished basements, garages, or hot tubs. Missing permits can kill a sale.
Safety
A permit triggers a mandatory inspection by a City Safety Codes Officer, ensuring our work meets strict safety standards.
What Electrical Work Requires a Permit?
According to the Alberta Safety Codes Act, a permit is required to install, alter, or add to an electrical system.
Common Projects Requiring Permits
- Panel Upgrades (100A to 200A)
- Hot Tub & Spa Wiring
- Garage Heater Installations
- Finished Basements & Renovations
- Adding New Circuits (for AC, microwave, etc.)
- Solar Panel Installations
What DOESN'T Need a Permit?
- —Replacing a light fixture or switch (on an existing box)
- —Changing a cover plate
The Crescent Electric Permit Process
We make the process invisible and effortless for you.
Application
Once you approve our quote, our Master Electrician submits the permit application to the RMWB Planning & Development department.
Rough-In Inspection
For renovations (like basements), we schedule an inspection before the drywall goes up so the inspector can see the wires.
Final Inspection
Once the job is done (devices installed), we schedule the final safety inspection.
Closure
You receive a copy of the passed permit for your records (keep this for when you sell your house!).
Homeowner Permits vs. Contractor Permits
In Fort McMurray, a homeowner can pull their own electrical permit, but only if they:
- •Own and live in the single-family home.
- •Do 100% of the work themselves (you cannot hire a handyman or unlicensed friend).
The Risk:
If you pull the permit, you are legally liable for the work. If you hire Crescent Electric, we take the liability. We carry the $5M insurance, the WCB coverage, and the Master Electrician license.
